What is Pilates?

Pilates is a system of exercises created by Joseph H. Pilates that effectively strengthens, stretches, and aligns the entire body. The Pilates apparatus utilizes spring tension along with pulleys to create resistance in a unique way.

Who was Joseph Pilates?

Pilates was a gymnast, boxer, circus-performer, and self-defense trainer. British authorities interned him during World War I along with other German citizens where he began creating his method of “Contrology.”

Joseph Pilates immigrated to the United States and opened his gym in New York City in the 1920s. Popularity grew, first among the dance and performing arts communities, and eventually reached the general public. Doctors referred patients to Pilates who rehabilitated injuries with great success. He taught until the age of 83 when he died in 1967.

What are the benefits of Pilates?

Practicing Pilates 2-3 times per week will enhance your physical well being.  Some of the benefits that you will see from regular private Pilates lessons include: better posture, tightened core/buttocks, and increased energy.

Who can train in Pilates?

Everyone! Pilates will challenge the most physically adept athlete while it's gentle enough for someone recouping from injury or childbirth. The  variety of mat and apparatus Pilates exercises allows your workout to be customized to your needs.

What is the difference between classical Pilates and all other types?

Classical or Authentic Pilates refers to specific ordered exercises which are performed on apparatus that have particular dimensions and resistances as designed by Joe Pilates. At Miami Beach Pilates Studio you can feel the difference that a Gratz reformer makes to your workout. Gratz was the original manufacturer of the Pilates reformer and remains the closest to his original specifications. A great deal of the Pilates classes available today are variations of the original exercises, and most of the modern apparatus have a very different size, shape and feel.

Why should I take private class as opposed to in a group?

Each person has unique needs and imbalances and will greatly benefit from training privately. You will see progress faster and will experience Pilates as a whole system that incorporates the reformer, cadillac, barrels, and chairs in each session.
